The Schism is painting project, which unites six compositions with Twelve particles.
Schism is a series of paintings by Zura Mchedlishvili (Kareli, b. 1988) that reflect on themes of power, greed, obsession, and control. The works depict a moment of a violent rupture stemming from the vices of contemporary society. Shattered fragments of all sorts of materials, from stone to mechanical and technological objects, illustrate a moment of collapse or transition in slow motion. The paintings are characterized by blurring, motion trails, and fragmented forms. They feature currency, digital visuals and technological subjects in dynamic compositions. Satirically rendered, exaggerated figures carry a dystopian and ominous air. The visuals unfolding in the works are at once reminiscent of Futurist paintings and film noir scenes. The figures are highly stylized, with elongated limbs and exaggerated musculature. Seamlessly blended shadows and highlights give the forms a sculptural three-dimensionality. The color palette is restricted, dominated by cool tones, contributing to a sense of eerie stillness.
